History – 2004 Islip

Holton vs Islip

June 2004

Original report written by Neil Robinson

This week’s match report comes from me for the first time, a situation brought about by the injury sustained by John, towards the end of the match against Islip. He has injured his back, and is unable to even sit at the computer, having to lay down (in a darkened room), a situation known frequently to many of our players.
Sunday was our first home game, and it was a fine and sunny day. John won the toss, and put Islip in to bat. They started well until, with the score on 46, one batsman called “yes”, changing this to “no” when the other bat was two-thirds down the track…46 for 1. The two Mikes had bowled well, as did AC on first change, but without managing a wicket, then GB, JS, and PW, all got one each, all caught, and at tea, Islip were 162 for 4.

It was R  McK’s turn for teas, and anyone who has “experienced” a tea by Rob will know how true this description is: the tables sagged under the weight, more like a feast for a Roman orgy than a cricket tea. Seriously – thanks Rob it was to- rate.
The tea must have had an illusory effect on John’s thinking, as, with Rob still clearing away tea, he looked in panic for an alternative opener, I must have been standing in just the wrong place, as he pointed at me…Anyway AB, and I opened the batting and put on 46, before Alan was bowled. John joined me, and the score reached 71 before I decided “there was plenty of batting to come” and gave an easy catch to mid-wicket. GH joined John, till at 119 GH was bowled. I told JR that the  bowling was easy, but he didn’t listen, and was bowled for 1. Then came Rob…..Did I say how good his tea was? No – he was unlucky, chopping a bottom edge on to his stumps for 2.  Well what else can I say…no one else troubled the scorers, leaving JS unbeaten on 55, and MS on nought not out.  Score 139 for 8…match drawn.
